Born and raised in Tucson, AZ, Jane Staley began studying the trombone in 4th grade. During her days at Catalina High School, her bands placed among the highest ranks traveling to competitions such as Portland Tournament of Roses, as well as El Paso’s Sun Bowl. The “Best Trombone Section” honor was awarded to her jazz band 2 years in a row at the Northern Arizona Jazz Festival, and Jane was subsequently selected to participate in Tucson’s All-Star Jazz Band performing as a warm-up band for Maynard Ferguson.
Before graduating from the University of Arizona with a Major in Anthropology and a Minor in Music Education, Jane studied under noted trombone professor, Tom Ervin. Her performance ensembles included Trombone Choir, Symphonic Band and Jazz Band. The participation in the Marching and Pep Bands allowed Jane to travel along with the U of A Wildcat football and basketball teams throughout the Western US, and to Tokyo, Japan, for the Coca-Cola Bowl. Along with college groups, Jane performed with the Tucson Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as with the Sunset Regiment Drum & Bugle Corps. Playing baritone bugle, she toured with the corps, competing throughout the the West & Canada. She spent a summer traveling the Eastern US and Canada with Star of Indiana Drum and Bugle Corps culminating at the 1986 International Championships, where the group placed 8th in the world.
Jane went on to assist teaching her high school marching band as well as assisting visual/marching instruction with the Sunset Regiment. While living in Tucson, Jane played with Foothills Philharmonic Orchestra and Brass Quintet, Sonora Winds, Salpointe Jazz Band, as well as traveling to Indiana to perform with Star of Indiana Alumni Drum & Bugle Corps.
Since relocating to Florida, Jane has performed with Florida Brass Drum & Bugle Corps, Second Time Arounders Marching Band, Richey Concert Band, Nature Coast Community Band, Anclote Winds, Deutschmeister Blas (German) Band, Filarmonica Luso Americana(Portuguese) Band, Richey Suncoast Theater musical productions, and numerous church ensembles and brass quintets.
Jane works from home as a Test Scorer, and in her spare time enjoys hiking and traveling.
