Gilbert Marcy began studying violin with Catherine Abele at the age of nine, and began studying clarinet the next year for the next three years with Armando Pizzello. He then studied violin with Mary Scipione for five years while learning to play viola all during his high school years. A highlight in his high school years was playing An Outdoor Overture by Aaron Copland in a combined high school orchestra with the composer conducting!
He played violin then viola in the Wellesley Symphony Orchestra (1966-1977) and was inspired by the trombone section of the Boston Symphony Orchestra after hearing them as soloists in 1968 to take up trombone. Also while he played in the Wellesley Symphony Orchestra at a concert in February 1969, Arthur Fiedler was guest conductor. Needless to say this resulted in a full house!
After moving to Florida (from Massachusetts) in 1979, he studied trombone with Otto Blankle for five years. Trombone led to Baritone Horn, which led to Tuba. He studied Organ with Karl Fultz in Burlington MA for two years in the late 1970’s then Organ and Viola with Juliana Moss in Clearwater, FL for two years starting in 1980. He also has been studying oboe starting in October 2011 with Georges Gallandre-Lebhar for three years and currently with Meg Cassell.
